Corks for a Cause
The Corks for a Cause campaign supports the Steve Ludzik Centre for Parkinson's Rehab. A portion of all proceeds and any additional online or cash donations will be donated to programs at the Centre. Please help us spread awareness of Parkinson's Disease and rehabilitation.
As of 2018, we have donated almost $4000 to the Parkinson's Centre!
What is Parkinson’s Disease?
As stated by the Parkinson’s Foundation of Canada, “Parkinson’s is a neurodegenerative disease. Movement is normally controlled by dopamine, a chemical that carries signals between the nerves in the brain. When cells that normally produce dopamine die, the symptoms of Parkinson’s appear”. These symptoms include tremors, stiffness, impaired balance and rigidity of muscles. In addition, those diagnosed with Parkinson’s can experience extreme fatigue, soft speech, difficulty swallowing and dementia.
Is there a cure? What treatments are available?
While there is still no cure, there are many therapy options that are beneficial for those with Parkinson’s. This includes physical therapy for mobility, occupation therapy for assistance with daily tasks, and speech therapy. The Steve Ludzik Centre for Parkinson’s Rehab has a team of therapists, a social worker and a rehabilitation assistant who provide care for Niagara residents affected by Parkinson’s.
Why did you choose to support Parkinson's?
In June 2013, we lost our grandmother, Mary McMahon, after a battle with Parkinson’s. Watching our grandmother live with this disease, we have gained a first-hand understanding of how beneficial the Steve Ludzik Centre for Parkinson’s Rehab is for Niagara residence of Niagara who are battling Parkinson’s disease. In the fall of 2013, Winey Girl Decor launched Corks for a Cause to help spread awareness of Parkinson's Disease and support our local Parkinson's Rehab Centre. Our grandparents taught us to live generously and with great kindness- to honour them, we felt compelled to support a local cause.
What is the Steve Ludzik Centre for Parkinson’s Rehab and how is it currently funded?
The Steve Ludzik Centre for Parkinson’s Rehab is located at the Hotel Dieu Shaver Health and Rehabilitation Centre. It provides interprofessional, time-limited client-centred rehabilitation to adult residents of the Niagara Region living with Parkinson’s disease. The Centre is funded through a private donation from former NHL player and coach, Steve Ludzik. In addition, Ludzik has agreed to donate proceeds from his annual celebrity roast and has worked with St.Catharines MP Rick Dykstra to have Hotel Dieu Shaver receive part of the proceeds from the Hockey Day in St. Catharines charity hockey game.
How much of the Corks for a Cause proceeds will go directly to the Steve Ludzik Centre?
As of 2017, 10% of all sales will be donated. Throughout Parkinson's Awareness month in April, there will also be additional product promotions where a portion of sales will go towards Corks for a Cause. All money raised will go towards the patient programs run by the Steve Ludzik Centre.
